Hi everyone,
First of all I'm must admit I'm a absolute noob here. Although I was able to install some popular cms's on my website earlier.
This time I finally found what I was looking for my archival work, unfortunately I was not able to find information of how to install Atom on a web-based server (for an archivist webpage). But I gave it a try. Unfortunately I'm stuck on the "Search configuration" step. The error states - "Can't connect to the server (couldn't connect to host)". Perhaps it has something to do with the Elasticsearch, but again – the only configuration tutorials for it on the internet cover only the wamp-, xampp-like server configuration manuals...
Maybe someone could help me by guiding through steps of installing Atom on a web-based server or by sharing some useful links?

Thanks, Ariel,
unfortunately I don't know where I should do it, for I'm lacking the basic knowledge about this type of installation. Should it be performed through my mac's terminal? Should some server name be specified for the command you pointed out?

Hi Karolis,

The AtoM installation instructions assume that you will be using a web server (we recommend Nginx and base our installation instructions on this; others have successfully used Apache). See: https://www.accesstomemory.org/docs/2.3/admin-manual/installation/linux/ubuntu-trusty/

AtoM is intended to be installed on a production ready Linux-based server - we use Ubuntu in development and production and again strongly recommend this, but others have been successful with different platforms. If you are trying to install the application on a Windows based server, we recommend virtualization.

Note that AtoM is NOT intended to be installed on a personal computer for production use! However, if you are looking for an easy way to create a local install on your computer for testing or development, that will work regardless of your operating system, we maintain a Vagrant box you can install easily - see:

Our YouTube channel also has a series of video tutorials on using the command-line in AtoM, which might help you - the first 3 videos relate to installing Vagrant, and the rest might be useful for further maintenance, troubleshooting, and configuration. See:

Regarding your question to Ariel, all commands in AtoM should generally be run from the root AtoM directory - e.g. the place you've installed the application. If you follow our recommended installation instructions, this is generally /usr/share/nginx/atom

There are some great command-line cheat sheets and tutorials out there; if you are new to working in the CLI, you might want to familiarize yourself with some of the basic commands first so you can navigate, etc.

Note that the command that Ariel shared would work for an installation using Ubuntu 16.04 with PHP 7 - if you are using PHP 5.5 on Ubuntu 14.04, the commands might be:

  • sudo service elasticsearch status
  • sudo service elasticsearch restart
