We've been working on extending Access to Memory (AtoM) to serve the broader GLAM sector (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) and Digital Asset Management needs. Here's what we've built so far.

Multi-Sector Support (GLAM/DAM)

The core innovation. AtoM traditionally serves archives using ISAD(G). We've extended it to support multiple descriptive standards in one installation:

  • Archives - ISAD(G), RAD, DACS, Dublin Core
  • Libraries - MARC-inspired bibliographic records with ISBN lookup
  • Museums - CCO (Cataloging Cultural Objects) and Spectrum 5.0 procedures
  • Galleries - Exhibition and artwork cataloging
  • DAM - IPTC/XMP metadata for digital assets and photographs

Each record can use its own descriptive standard. The system auto-detects which template to display based on the record's assigned type.

AI Tools

Practical AI assistance for archival work:

  • Extract Entities (NER) - Automatically identify people, places, organisations from descriptions
  • Generate Summary - Create concise summaries of lengthy descriptions
  • Translate - Translation with fine-tuning for archival terminology
  • Review Dashboard - Manage and approve AI-generated suggestions

In Development:

  • Extract All (HTR) - Handwritten text recognition
  • Extract Dates - Identify and normalise date references
  • Extract Digits - Pull out reference numbers, identifiers
  • Extract Letters - Character recognition from documents
Digital Object Viewers

Multiple viewers for different content types:

  • Mirador - IIIF-compliant image viewer with annotations
  • OpenSeadragon - Deep zoom for high-resolution images
  • Multi-page TIFF/PDF viewer - Browse paginated documents
  • Video/Audio snippets - Capture, save and download clips from AV content
  • 3D Model Viewer - Google Model Viewer with AR support, hotspots, and IIIF 3D manifests

Privacy & PII Protection

  • Scan for PII - Detect personal identifiable information in descriptions
