Hi all,
I'm working as an archivist for a small non-profit that works in the US and Honduras. We will, eventually, have a website of the non-profit's work available online. I'm trying to source a digital preservation system that allows for bilingual entries. Our users are both English- and Spanish-speakers, so I'm hoping to make the collection searchable in both languages (IE searching 'gato' and 'cat' will turn up the same entries).
1) Does AtoM support this? Is there any existing documentation/examples of bilingual archives I can show the director? I've found examples in multiple languages, but nothing that operated in both.
2) Does this require creating all entries twice--once in English, once in Spanish--in order to be searchable, or is there a way to use the existing translation code to do so?

Hi Kendra,
I'll answer your second question first.
Yes, if you want to have content in multiple languages, and have it searchable across cultures, then you need to create both an English and Spanish version of the record. This can be done by creating the record in the source culture, saving, flipping the interface to the translated culture, and then re-entering edit mode. AtoM will display the original source content above the edit fields, so you can use it as a reference when adding the translation. See:
Additionally, we have just had an institution sponsor a very relevant regression fix - previously in AtoM, when importing descriptions via CSV, it was possible to import translations at the same time, but that functionality was lost when the CSV import was overhauled in the 2.4 release. We'll be adding that functionality back to the 2.6 release, as per this ticket:
There is no way to automate translation in AtoM. The translation code in AtoM merely handles what language to display. Our user community provides translations for elements of the user interface (more details, and how you can help with that, here), but AtoM can't automatically translate your metadata for you, unfortunately.
To answer the first question, now:
If you have added a version of a description in both target languages (e.g. English and Spanish), then it is possible to search across cultures. AtoM's search page will display results in the language of the interface, but you can also use the language facet to narrow the results to a specific culture. When you navigate to a description from the search results, AtoM will first display it in the current language of the user interface, but: a) users can always change the language of the interface via the Language menu in the AtoM header, and b) if there is a translation of the record available, AtoM will show an "Other languages available" button at the top of the description, that can be used to flip the interface to the other available languages.
The NATO AtoM site has some content that is fully described in both English and French, so you can test this out a bit there.
Try searching for conseil or secrétaire in the English interface. Then flip to the French interface and try searching for council or secretary.
