Hi there,

What version of Elasticsearch have you installed, and what version of Java? With AtoM 2.5 on Ubuntu 16.04, this should be:
  • Elasticsearch 5.6
  • openjdk version "1.8.0_212"
Some suggestions:

First, make sure your permissions are configured properly. You can try resetting them by running the following command from AtoM's root installation directory (which should be /usr/share/nginx/atom if you have followed our instructions):
  • sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /usr/share/nginx/atom
For Elasticsearch troubleshooting, please see the following previous forum threads, which include many suggestions:
Please start with these suggestions - specifically, trying to determine if it is a memory issue, as it commonly is with Elasticsearch issues - and let us know what you find. If nothing in there helps you to identify and/or solve the issue, please provide us with more information about your installation environment and what you've tried, as per the questions found at the top of the second thread.

If you think it is a memory issue, this thread has more links on how to adjust the default JVM heap size:
However, as noted earlier in that thread, we've had mixed results with adjusting this. The best approach is to increase the RAM to your server to at least 4GB, to make sure that the full 2GB default heap size is available to Elasticsearch.

Let us know if that helps!
