| Editor's Note |
| We've detected a long-awaited uptick in North American electronics industry hiring and retraining. Part of the increase is being driven by additional hiring in western states, reports semiconductor editor Mark LaPedus. The region is also seeing increased venture capital activity, particularly in states like Utah and Colorado. In hard-hit states like Arizona, California and even farther east in Ohio, any sign of increased hiring is good news. However, new technology jobs may also indicate that new business models are beginning to take hold and that we could begin to see actual economic growth in recession-plagued regions.

Viewpoint: Is EDA innovating enough?
Much has been written and said about the travails of the EDA industry. Some industry leaders are shrinking in size and losing money. The industry as a whole is not growing and prospects are not promising. Part of the problem can be explained by the fact that we are just coming out of one of the worst recessions in history that has impacted most industries. Yet, most observers agree that the industry's struggles can't be explained by the economy alone.
