Hi Krisztian
I have been forwarded your posting but I can not find your email.

We should talk.

I have been doing 19 channel qEEG and Neurofeedback for some time and I am a researcher at Goldsmith.
I was also a sound engineer many years ago.

I have been meaning to get it to the Sonification of EEG, so I would be interested to help.

I am up in Cambridge some time.

Do you know Neil Rutterford (Anglia Ruskin University; UK)

Drop me an email some time

Tony Steffert

Subject: FW: {IBVA}, Creative Use of EEG

Hello All

My name is Krisztian Hofstadter and I am studying Music Technology at
ARU, Cambridge. The final project I am working on is about how to use
EEG for sonification purposes. Well, I am sure you know the part in
the IBVA software where you can trigger an audio sample with a peak;
this is also a sonification.
I am using Max/Msp (http://www.cycling74.com/products/max5) and
Supercollider (http://www.audiosynth.com/) , but a while ago I
experimented a bit with sending the raw EEG data message from Quartz
Composer to MAx/Msp vie OSC (Open Sound Control) as well.

Recently I work on two projects which are the following:

1. Receiving the Raw EEG data in Max/Msp and Supercollider, where I
would like to write a patch for FFT use. Well, I am thinking also
about a 3d representation like the IBVA software has, but step by
step... Masahiro prepared a Max/Msp object called IbvaGet. I would
like to achieve the same without using the object. Maybe some ERP
related work, like the one Mick Grierson did..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNp71xBDcMA&feature=related

Here I would like to add a small biofeedback feature to the patch
which could be used for meditation purposese (EEG Neurofeedback in
IBVA Software).

2. I am using the from IBVA software exported EEG data for
sonification, where I read the recorded microvolts into Arrays and use
them for various things.

Most of the work I have done with IBVA can be found here:
http://www.tedor2.extra.hu/11%20brain.html

As I am a music student it took me many hours to find out the way of
receiving data, but there is a lot more to understand. I would like to
find people who have similar interests or could explain some of the
protocols, algorithms I have to use for FFT, or coherence
calculations, etc.

Any help appreciated.

All the best
Krisztian

Can someone pass this email on to anyone that you feel may be interested

Basically we have looked into IBVA but not committed to it at all as yet

However I am interested in speaking to anyone who has used this product in
a research capacity with an external stimulant applied.

thanks Martin

Have you had a look at the Moore Institutes 'Hemi-sync' product of binaural beats??

http://www.hemi-sync.com/

They use frequencies to induce altered states and use it for 'remote viewing'...

Thats one of the things I was looking for.

When I saw it originally I was shown how it could be linked with garage on a mac and used to control the plugins - unfortunately I was rather excited and couldnt control it very well.

Visualisation is far stronger than we realise in many ways.

One of the main things I am interested in is to analyse what sound waves/ frequencies induce certain altered states and if it is possible to replicate these in reverse ie to play back a sound and if it created the same state in the majority of tests.

I was also intersted to see if anyone had analysed any other mammal with this or another product.

Thanks Martin

HI Martin,

I have conducted initial tests with the EEG machine on a musician whilst they visualised playing the violin - the results we're good and further experiments with musicians are planned for april in order to help me with my dissertation - here is the video of the session:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1k15S_l9fc&feature=channel_page

skip forward a couple of minutes and you will see the violinist...

Hope this helps

You also might want to check out Centerpointe institute (www.centerpointe.com).

They are doing basically the same as the Monroe institute. They call their technology Holosync.

Is anyone aware or can point me in the right direction on research being carried out there must be a way of using certain wave forms as in binaural or frequency adjustments to reach an induced state - I was interested in how this would show itself in respect to brainwaves.

Anyone doing or has done research on sub-bass or higher frequency levels and if it alters brain function in relation or if you have monitored chemical release levels after being connected to binaural stimulation/ sound.

Sound or recollection of it forms part of long term memory function.

If you have let me know  - if you havent and want a test subject then let me know.

Thanks

You can find a lot of information and links to research work in this article:

http://www.centerpointe.com/about/articles_research.php

You also could have a look at Prof. Persinger’s work on inducing altered states of mind, although he is more working with stimulating the brain by electromagnetical fields.

Best,

hello

to evoke alpha brain rhythms:
I used the following link earlier to work out the hemisync issue (free
software):

http://uazu.net/sbagen/

best
Krisztian

ps.: I am not good at music theory, but there is a way of entraining the
brain to produce more alpha waves in an organic way as well instead of
colliding to sinewaves.
You have to know how to compose music, chord progresses, etc.

I have  looked at the "koren" helmet etc that stimulates using electro magntism

I am very uncomfortable with the potential misuse of devices like this

Has anyone  used EEG  or similar in the following situtions?

Watching Television over a period of time ie 5 hours +
Under the influence of alcohol or other stimulants
Both of the above combined

If so did anything spring out at you?

What did baseline look like before you conducted it?

Are you able to get back to a baseline state whilst doing this?

Ok here is what I'm getting at !

If you watch television and get into an Alpha state which I think should occur unless perhaps you are watching a film are you able though the use of say "stimulants" able to move from that state and into Beta? Or for arguments sake if the intake ingested was at a level whereby you were effectively not conscious what would the activity levels be at ? Would they be delta or theta or infact beta??

Has anyone worn this throughout the night into deep sleep ??? and if so what activity or state was shown?

As I said I am happy to trial the above as long as its safe and of course legal later on this year in the UK as I am intrigued by certain aspects.

Hi Martin

I’m not sure I can answer your question directly but I’m happy to swap notes. In 2007 I spent a week at Jim Hardt’s ‘Biocybernaut Institute’ entraining my Alpha waves and that’s what created my interest in this technology.

I want to introduce services in the UK using EEG feedback to provide therapeutic, performance enhancement & spiritual development, and would be happy to share thoughts and experiences.

Does anyone have any views on the best training out there on this subject ?

Hello IBVA user

Could anyone suggest me a book or website where I could find out how to
use FFT on the Raw EEG data? I would like to use Max/Msp.

Any help appreciated!
