Happy Thanksgiving!

Sunday evening we had a very special guest in the worship service, Lois Barlow Merritt. Lois has been working on a book about her parents’ life and ministry, Dr. Nathan and Doris Barlow.

Some of you may remember when Dr. Barlow was the only doctor in Bell Gardens (some of you reading this may have even been delivered into this world by Dr. Barlow). This book recounts their medical missionary work in Africa.

Scott White, Pastor of Global Outreach at Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena, California said, “Nathan Barlow MD, Nearest Doctor for a Million People is a journey into post World War II Ethiopia. It is a true story that spans six decades, and extends into Zaire and the Central African Republic after a 1970s Marxist takeover of Ethiopia. This memoir, drawn from family remembrances and from volumes of meticulously saved correspondence, brings joy and sorrow in equal portion to its pages. Dr. Barlow’s work encompassed sobering epidemics, joyous celebrations, regional catastrophes, and vast training programs. His last great project, launched at age 84, was to help the thousands of victims of mossy foot disease. His missionary career began in the era of travel by ocean liner, and soared to completion in the jet age. The story of Nathan Barlow shows how one person’s service to God can bring community change, both now and for eternity. I was caught up in this very tactile description of medical mission in Africa, and I recommend this book to you.”

The book is available through Amazon. You can search “Nathan Barlow” at Amazon, or use this link:

Royalties received from the book will be donated to Dr. Barlow’s Mossy Foot Project. You can learn more about this work at MossyFoot.com, or use this link:

Take care,

Jim
