Dear Developers,

In ibtracs.since1980.list.v04r00.csv
there are non-standard storm names with flag 'PROVISIONAL'

BB022021 and AS012021

Is this a feature we must live with?

terveisin, Markus

a Markus Kaukonen,IBTrACS Q&A
Hi Markus-
IBTrACS gathers updates for the provisional data from automated sources. PResently, that source is the TC Vitals input to US forecast models. I believe the source for this data is the JTWC.
Anyway, their input data files will have a name once the system is named by the local forecast agencies. At present, I don't know of an automated source for data from other agencies.
As far as naming, the ones you identified are the ATCF identifiers (ATCF is the system used by US forecast agencies like JTWC and NHC). They assign this ID and we store it for traceability. If a system does not have a name now (meaning while data are provisional), then the name will likely be updated when the final best track is available (in this case, from India Met. Department [IMD]).

I hope this helps-
-Ken
