You are probably having problems with message id numbers.
Delete your rc files and resubscribe to these news groups.

While this may work, it is not a very practical solution. While
discussing this problem with the help desk last night, I checked one of
the groups I follow on news2. There were 818 posts for that group.
Now, if you think that I can remember which of those I saw, then I must
be able to walk on water. That advice may work for a small, inactive
news group, but it does not cut it for the rest. A better solution is
needed.

Unfortunately, that's easier said than done. When the new server
hardware and software was installed, all the messages were
renumbered. Since most news reader programs track the articles
you read by the message number, this causes the problem you see.
If you delete the .rc file and resubscribe, then the first time
you access a group you will have a lot of messages to wade
through, but after that it won't be a problem.

The only other method of dealing with this is to track read
messages by "Message-ID" (which is unique to each message) rather
than message number, which is different on each server.
Unfortunately, this is usually only available at the server level
(using the nntp NEWNEWS command) and is frequently even disabled
there (at least for peon users like us) because of the high load
it can place on the server.
