Can't purge WCM items

I'm trying to purge some old deleted WCM items, but whenever I try, I get the following message in the portlet:
Unable to purge "Service Description". The following error occurred:
Unable to access item from repository.
I want to get rid of it.
On SystemOut.log I see the following:

What does that mean?

It looks like there was some problem purging certain items with many history elements.
I had to delete the history elements first, and then the item was purged correctly.
