My customer is trying to develop web applications based around a VAGEN
4.5 environment (Windows 2000 middle tier) and accessing an AS/400
system which is at Version 4 Release 4 level. The VAGEN Server for
AS/400 (5769-VG1) has SF63763 applied as a requisite.

They are unable to get this functionality working.

Can anyone advise all the required components so we can verify.

Is client access required?

Depending on how you configure your client/server, and what the client
program is, you'll either required to have Client Access
(remotecomtype=CA400) or AS/400 Toolbox for Java (remotecomtype=JAVA400)
on the machine that is accessing the AS/400 server. You should refer to
the Client/Server communications guide for more setup information.

My understanding is that the AS/400 Toolbox for Java is standard with OS/400
operating system and not a licenced feature?

The customer seems to think that the AS/400 Toolbox for Java is not licenced
on their machine which does not sound right.

We have tried this and has not made any difference.

Please let me explain environment and components so that you can tell me what
is missing.

Workstation : Browser

Middle-tier Server (Windows 2000) : IIS 5.0 Web Server, VAGEN Server 4.5,
Websphere Application Server Advanced Edition 3.5 + Fixpack 2

Back-End Server (AS/400) : OS/400 V4R4, VAGEN Server for AS/400 4.4 with
SF63736, Integrated Language Environment for COBOL for AS/400

We are developing JAVA applications so the AS/400 Toolbox for Java is
appropriate. What is the requirement for the AS/400 Toolbox running on the
AS/400 platform and what release is required for OS/400 V4R4 to support VAGEN
3.5. I'm also assuming the same jar file should be installed on the Windows
2000 server?

There is very scanty information on the AS/400 requirements with VAGEN 4.5
and the customer wants a checklist so that we can verify the software
implementation. We have similar Web-based connectivity working OK under VAGEN
4.5 to a S/390 VSE CICS back-end. We wish to migrate that functionality to
the AS/400 platform (minus CICS) but we cannot get connectivity and Websphere
produces an undeterminable error.

If there is an AS/400 customer with similar configration we would like to
communicate and understand what the missing piece is between Websphere on the
Win2000 server and the VAGEN server on the AS/400?

Can you check that if you have created a work database on the AS/400 that you are
trying to connect to? The work database is QVGEN/VGNWORK *FILE. To create it,
you (*SECOFR) need to:
CALL QVGEN/QVGNCRTD
To clean up the workdatabase you can:
CALL QVGEN/QVGNDBUT

We have checked this out and it is correctly set up.

I don't believe we are getting as far as the AS/400 server but we have validated
nonetheless.
