The VisualAge Magazine first went to press in the fall of 1997 as a
developer's forum for exchanging ideas, gaining insights into the
VisualAge
family and discussing key issues facing the industry. Then VisualAge for

Java was a brand new product. Today you can beta test Version 3 of the
Professional Edition and explore technical previews of the product on
Linux
and Java 2. Because e-business is a requirement for companies to stay
competitive, more VisualAge tools are interoperating with e-business
standard
Java servlets,JavaBeans and Enterprise JavaBeans.

Today VisualAge developers need a forum for exchanging ideas, and
focused
on developing for Java and e-business. A developer Web site, IBM
VisualAge
Developer Domain (VADD), was launched a year ago as a home base for
discussing issues, offering technical information, and providing beans
and
tools, and new VisualAge for Java features in incremental code drops.
Quickly,
VADD became IBM's primary channel for delivering warranted beans and
tools to Java e-business programmers. As an extension of its Java
coverage,
VADD increasingly provides information on developing within the IBM
Application>Framework for e-business. This includes Java
interoperability with
VisualAge Smalltalk and VisualAge Generator.

The VisualAge Magazine has served up helpful news and views on hot tools
and
technologies. But in its Web format, VADD provides news more quickly and

frequently, and delivers tested code as it becomes available. For these
reasons, The VisualAge Magazine is closing its doors with the June/July
1999 issue and
offering subscribers the opportunity to sign on as Professional
Subscription
members of VADD at no charge for the next year. If you area already a
VADD subscriber,
your subscription will be extended for an additional year

If you are a subscriber to The VisualAge Magazine, signing on to VADD
to
claim your personal subscription is a simple process. Just visit this
IBM Web site
and follow the instructions for subscribing:

Working with IBM and the VisualAge technologies has been a great
experience.
But as always, especially in technology, things change. This change, I
am quite sure
is a great one. Ralph Earl, the person in charge of content for VADD is
also a regular
columnist in Distributed Computing. He and I have been working together
for quite
some time and his approach to content is much like mine... it must be
the product of
experienced practitioners! Expect more of the same, much more, and in a
timely
manner. The web allows for a more direct and immediate information
channel.
I love instant gratification.

So long for now,
