My dog knocked my T40 off the coffee table and when I boot I now get
repeated beeps and this error message

error 0210: stuck key 17

I have fiddled with the keyboard - removed it and replaced it several
times, and cannot see a stuck key.

Am I barking up the wrong tree please?

P.S. The laptop hit the ground pretty hard and part of the screen is
now slightly discoloured.

Thanks

boot it withough the keyboard connected at all- remove the normal
keyboard and ribbons cables.

if you get a stuck key errors, you have a broken system board.

If not, try a ps/2 keyboard plugged into the ps/2 port.

if that works, you've isolated the problem to a bad keyboard.

Laptop keyboards can be found at reasonable prices on the internet.

It's acutally likely the t40 doesn't have PS/2 port. A USB keyboard is
good test though.

UPDATE - I got a new keyboard and it has solved the problem. Thanks
for your help.
I am also grateful to IBM for designing a laptop for which spares are
available.

IBM and Dell laptop spares are easy to come by, and decent service manuals are
available for both brands. But getting spare parts and service information for
HPaq, Toshiba, Sony, Fujitsu, Panasonic and other lesser brands is as painful as
a root canal... Ben Myers
