Hi,
I have an R40 on which I am trying to install the latest version of
Rescue and Recovery, using "setup_tvtrnr3_1027.exe". During
installation of the product I get "error 25014. There was an error
installing the R&R boot manager. RC=6". Does anyone have an idea what
may be causing this problem?

Regards, John

If you have messed with partitioning your hard disk, that may cause a
problem.

>From the ThinkVantage Rescue &Recovery version 3 User's Guide:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before you install Rescue and Recovery

Before you install the Rescue and Recovery program it is important that
the following prerequisites are met:
* Windows XP or Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3. If you are installing
this program on a hard disk that has a capacity of greater than 137 GB,
Service Pack 1 is required for Windows XP.
* Internet Explorer 5.5 (or higher).
* 128 MB of memory of which no more than 8 MB can be designated as
shared memory under the video setup in BIOS.
* 800 MB of free disk space.Administrator rights are required to
perform this installation.

I have made no changes to the disk partitioning. I recently had a hard
disk error on the C: drive and had to run chkdsk to correct the
problem, but that should not have affected the IBM reserved area. I
have the latest bios level and my Windows XP maintenance is up to date.
How do you check the validity of the IBM reserved disk space?

Turn off the ThinkPad and wait a few seconds, then turn on and press
the blue Access IBM button at the beginning of the boot sequence until
you get to the Rescue and Recovery workspace. If you get there, then
the IBM reserved area is probably OK.

Note: If you go into your BIOS setup menu, by pressing F1 at the
beginning of the boot sequence, go to Security, and verify that the
Predesktop area is set to Normal.

One other thought. Did you uninstall any previous versions of Rescue
and Recovery or Rapid Restore Ultra before trying to install Rescue and
Recovery version 3? It's a good idea to reboot after uninstalling the
old software, before installing the new.

The Access IBM button does not work any longer. The Predesktop setting
is Normal.
I tried to reinstall or repair the Access IBM software with the
'aibm-r402681-en.exe' which I had previously downloaded, but I get
error 1721 when I run the setup.
What may cause this?
Thanks for your help.

'aibm-r402681-en.exe' is only the Help Files for Access IBM. You
probably get the 1721 error because it is attempting to write to the
IBM Hidden Protected Area.

Before you continue, you need to back up your hard disk, using
Microsoft Backup if need be.

The following procedures will delete all data on your hard drive!

You can try booting up from the Rescue Media (1 CD), and see if you can
restore your hard disk to 'Factory State'. Hopefully you have or can
make the Rescue Media (sometimes called Recovery Media). Look in Start
> All Programs > Access IBM or Start > All Programs > ThinkVantage to see if you have the option to make this Rescue CD or Recovery CD.

If the above doesn't work, you can boot up with the Recovery Disc set
(not to be confused with the Rescue Media)(this Recovery Disc set is
composed of 6-7 CD's). If you don't have these, look in Start > All
Programs > Access IBM or Start > All Programs > ThinkVantage to see if
you have the option to make this Recovery Disc set. If you don't have
these CD's or can't make them, then you will have to buy them from
IBM/Lenovo (cost about $50) When you boot up with the Recovery Disc
set, choose to restore to 'Factory State'.

When you restore to 'Factory State' your R40 will be like it was when
you received it from IBM. You will need to restore your data from the
backup made previously.

If you don't want to go through all the above, then I don't know any
way for you to repair the IBM Hidden Protected Area and have the blue
Access IBM button work. You also probably will not be able to install
Rescue & Recovery, as this writes to the IBM Hidden Protected Area.

You´re receiving this error because some proogram it´s blocking the
MBR of the HDD. R&R needs to write some data in the MBR. I had the same
problem until I unsinstalled some anti-spyware software (Surf
Accuracy).

If it doesn´t work try to run the cleanMBR utility and then trying to
install RR again. You can find it in:

Good luck!

But more simply, boot from a Win98 or other boot diskette and run the
Fdisk /mbr command.
