Please excuse any howlers, since I'm on the limits of my knowledge in this
area, and in some cases beyond my limit.

I have an old (1997?) IBM Thinkpad 760EL X4G which is playing up.

No 2 son (he's getting better than his old man at this lark) has installed
Win 98, but we are still having problems. This in itself wasn't easy, since
the TP doesn't have a CD ROM drive, so he had to network with our home PC to
use the CD ROM on that. Could this have caused any of the problems we've
subsequently encountered as follows?

On boot up everything appears OK, 'IBM Thinkpad' flashes on screen and
appears to be the correct size and position. Screen then goes blank and
19153 appears - is this an error message? Screen then displays 4 panels, I
think it should be one, which it is impossible to read.

Hit Esc and screen displays Error 19153, presumably the same 19153 as
before. What does this mean?

Hit F1, get message 'There is a problem with your display settings, adapter
type incorrect, or current settings don't work with your hardware'.

Click 'OK' and get Display Settings dialogue box from Control Panel.

Click 'Cancel' and machine continues and boots OK except that the display
only occupies the centre of the screen, there's a 1" blank border all around
the working display area.

Any attempt to change display settings requires you to reboot and you start
all over again!

Display Adapter shows as Trident 9685/9680/9682/9385/9382/9385-1 PCI.

How do I get it to use the entire display panel?

We tried reinstalling the BIOS using spsdhz73.exe downloaded from the IBM
site, but when doing this we get message 'The process does not recognise
this system. The utility process has not completed.' So we're not sure if
the BIOS is OK or not. Does the fact that we are able to boot as above
indicate that the BIOS is OK?

Any suggestions?

Any help gratefully received.

TIA.

Chris.

Chris,

Start here: http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/DSHY-3SBNHE.html for everthing
you'll need for your system. Bear in mind that W98 is NOT supported on the
760 series as well as W95.

What model no. unit is this? Look at the label on the bottom of the unit,
should be a 2647UXX where X is a letter and a digit.

Hopefully he copied the W98 folder to the HD and then ran setup? See here:
http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/DSHY-3VGPMA.html for step by step
instructions and notes on any special W98 considerations. Follow the
instructions explicitly.

See here: http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/DSHY-3VQQS6.html then see here:

If it's booting, the BIOS should be OK. The 19153 error code is a system
board error. Make sure you have correctly configured the system by entering
EZSetup (press and hold F1 while booting and release after the MEMCOUNT
completes and you hear the POST beep) and then fly the birdie to Startup and
select the boot sequence for the unit (I suggest FDD1 and the HDD1). Then
click OK and select Config. Make sure the memory is properly recognized and
then click Initialize. Then select Restart and let us know if the error
message appears again.

Chris,

The border around your screen is due to the screen size being set to 640
x 480, increase the size to 800x600 and the border will go away.
Control Panel/Display/Settings/Screen Area, slide slider to the right
and you'll get 800x600 screen size. Hit APPLY, OK.

When you ran the BIOS update, you inserted the floppy and turned the
computer on?
Only that will run the BIOS update.

Good luck,

We tried that, but in order for the new settings to take effect you have to
reboot and hey presto you're back to square 1! Perhaps there's something
else we need to do first.

BIOS update didn't take, but we're not sure now that the BIOS is at fault.

Regards.

Chris.
