This site has been running fine for months but their network went down briefly when a switch failed.  After fixing the switch issue the lanes "which IPL'd" got an IP from CC and came on up fine.  DD which is a controller/terminal came up with the W901 and W902 messages about no acting master controller and no acting file server, which I took to indicate it couldn't see CC on the network.  We suspected more network cable issues or a bad NIC card in DD but that was not the issue.  I threw my laptop on the lane using DD's patch cable and could ping CC, the gateway and get out to the internet.

We replaced DD with another DD and got the same message when trying to do the LDR for that box.  I pulled the harddrive out of the DD (SP-723) changed and activated the controller config for DD to only be a controller.  IPL'd the terminal and gave it an ID and it came up fine as a terminal.  The site has a 2nd C43 from a store they closed we can use as a controller only DD, but before I head back to the site tomorrow I would like to know if anyone has encountered this before.  It's almost as if something is misconfigured on CC but we don't know what would have been changed before all this started.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Max

I have seen this recently on two different systems.  One was my lab and the other was a customer's site.  Both were running controller terminals instead of dedicated CC and DD configs.  If I try to lan disk using the netbios method, I get the error in the original post here.  If I try it using the IP addresses, the controller being imaged (non master controller) dumps.

any ideas on what could be going on?   I've searched the docs for these messages but have come up empty.

thanks!

OK let’s ask some questions here.

1)            Have you done a CPREP and LDR from these controllers before?

2)            If you have, did you do any OS Upgrades since they worked?

3)            When you did an OS Upgrade, did you select the correct choices when you did them?

If you answered yes to #2, then it could be possible that it was not done correctly and it will affect this function.

As long as CC is running the store, or the lab would be as well, then there should not be a problem, provided the OS upgrade was done properly.

Those are my only guesses as to why they do not work anymore.

Thank you,

The store is one we took over, so I cannot say what was done there in the past.  The Cprep worked fine but the LDR failed, so I haven’t done a successful one from the store.  No OS updates have been done on either to my knowledge.

I can test that on my lab by upgrading and seeing if that allows me to LDR afterwards.

Thanks!

Joey:

You can only use the network protocol configured for controller to controller communications (CCC) on the acting master controller when using the Disk Rebuild Utility (DRU). If the acting master is configured for NetBIOS you cannot use IP for the DRU

That was it, Ben.  I went to System Config > Controller to Controller Communications > and it was set to IP Based.  I changed it to NetBios and saved.  Now it works like a champ.

Thanks for your help!
