Origin-The cartoons were published in Washington Post.
Value-These cartoons vividly demonstrate the situation in American society.
Limitations-The cartoons only show one perception of the situation in the USA and we don't see the background information on which the cartoon is based.
1. Cartoon "It's okay- we're hunting Communists" demonstrates that HUAC was creating the state of fear in the society and this can be inferred from people's faces. They were searching for "Un-Americans" among Americans and for the evidences of being a communist.
2. Cartoon "You read books, eh?" demonstrates how ten people from HUAC check for communists not only in government but in schools too. the author of cartoon also shows that fear of HUAC was exsessive as we see that 10 men investigating one poor woman. Man holding scissors demonstrates how anti-communists wanted to get rid of any ideas of the USSR.
3. Cartoon "We now have new and important evidence" demonstrates how based on rumors and unproved evidences, HUAC was condemning people for being communists. And the name of this cartoon is sarcastic and, actually demonstrates how "new and important evidence" was portrayed.
4. Cartoon "I have here in my hand..." demonstrates the policy of McCarthy. Faked latter in his hands shows that his evidences were untruthworthy, and as we see from the year of this cartoon (1954) McCarthy's influence was fading away.
5. Cartoon "Stand fast, men-They're armed with marshmallows" literally makes fun of HUAC by showing that their fear and panic were excessive, and that they were too afraid of communist. Despite controlling people in the government for the presence of communist ideas, HUAC was even cheking young innocent children, in this case scouts.
