The following is a list of questions for the second summer reading. However, unlike the previous assignment, the questions listed below will be due November 1 when we will be closer to an assessment of the issues featured in the book. See you soon!
1. Evaluate William Dodd's initial impression of Hitler's Nazi Germany. How does the correlate to the imagery that he sees?
2. List three examples of totalitarian Nazi brutality to which Dodd is exposed.
3. Assess the portrayal of Hitler in the book. Does Dodd present him as an evil monster or does he show a humanistic side. How are other high ranking Nazis depicted?
4. In what way does life in Nazi Germany adversely affect the Dodd family?
5. As a result of the book, what have you learned about the Nazi regime that you hadn't already known? What surprised you? What confirmed things you already knew?
6. In your opinion, why might a highly educated and culturally developed society, such as Germany in the 1930s, embrace an authoritarian reality such as the Nazis?
7. At the same time Hitler arose in Nazi Germany America was also experiencing serious social, economic and political turmoil. Why do you think America was reluctant to turn to radical ideas such as Nazism? Do you think the radicalism that emerged in Germany, Italy and Russia in the 20th could ever develop with any level of significance here? Defend your answer.
