Dear Members of the SIGDC:

As you know, the Special Interest Group on Data Citation began in November 2010 to promote awareness of data-related research and scholarship through data citation. As data professionals, we understand that citing data supports the discovery and reuse of data, leading to better science through the validation of results. Citing data also acknowledges it as an essential part of the scientific record. Although IASSIST special  interest groups are not necessarily meant to be permanent, we think it is not yet time to dissolve this group.

Indeed, at the recent IASSIST annual conference in Cologne, members of the SIGDC met and discussed where our efforts might be most needed and effective in the coming year. We recently sent the meeting minutes. As you will see, the group thought the focus of the SIGDC in the future should be in three areas: 1)  education and training, 2) an information clearinghouse, and 3) advocacy. With these in mind, the SIGDC hopes to continue its efforts to help others learn about and promote best practices in data citation.

It has been a year of rising awareness in the larger community of data sharing and citing, and Hailey and I have enjoyed co-chairing the SIGDC in this environment.  Our term of service has come to an end, however, and we want to  encourage the election of a new chair or co-chairs very soon. No one came forward at the Cologne meeting, but we would like to offer the full group another chance so that the group does not go into hiatus. If you're interested in chairing  or co-chairing the group this year, or you'd like to nominate someone else, please contact Hailey or me. We think it is important to continue pushing the forward momentum on data citation and making sure the social sciences’ interests are represented.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Moss, ICPSR, eam...@umich.edu
