Hi Valerie,I’d very strongly recommend using the DataCite method for citing datasets which is very similar to the IASSIST guidance in your blog post. (http://schema.datacite.org/meta/kernel-2.0/doc/DataCite-MetadataKernel_v2.0.pdf)2.2 CitationBecause many users of this scheme are members of a variety of academic disciplines, DataCite remains discipline‐agnostic concerning matters pertaining to academic style sheet requirements. Therefore, DataCite recommends rather than requires a particular citation format. In keeping with this approach, the following is the recommended ormat for rendering a DataCite citation for human readers using the first five properties of the scheme:Creator (PublicationYear): Title. Publisher. IdentifierIt may also be desirable to include information from two optional properties, Version and ResourceType (as appropriate). If so, the recommended form is as follows:Creator(PublicationYear): Title. Version. Publisher. ResourceType. IdentifierFor citation purposes, the Identifier may optionally appear both in its original format and in a linkable, http format, as it is practiced by the Organisation for Economic Co‐operation and Development (OECD), as shown below. Here are several examples:· Irino, T; Tada, R (2009): Chemical andmineral compositions ofsedimentsfromODP Site 127‐797.Geological Institute,University of Tokyo.doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.726855. http://dx.doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.726855· Geofon operator(2009):GEFONevent gfz2009kciu (NW Balkan Region). GeoForschungsZentrumPotsdam(GFZ). doi:10.1594/GFG.GEOFON.gfz2009kciu.· Denhard, Michael(2009): dphase_mpeps: MicroPEPS LAF‐Ensemble run by DWDforthe MAP D‐PHASE project. WorldData Centerfor Climate. doi: 10.1594/WDCC/dphasempeps. http://dx.doi.org/10.1594/WDCC/dphase_mpepsWe’re still at the stage of trying to reach consensus about how to cite data – I’m co-chair of the CODATA working group on data citation which will shortly be publishing a report on the current status of data citation, and will be coming up with a report on best practice next year.A vital part of data citation is that it is treated exactly the same way as a paper citation – making data a research output that’s equal in status to a paper. If you’ve any other questions – give me a shout!Best wishes,SarahFrom: JISC Managing Research Data Programme [mailto:JIS...@JISCMAIL.AC.UK] On Behalf Of Valerie McCutcheon

Hey, folks, I suggested Valerie McCutcheon take a look at our brochure. One thing, I suggested the ICPSR link because the brochure linked from the IASSIST page seemed to be taking a really long time to load (http://iassistdata.org/sites/default/files/iassist-data-citation-quick-guide.pdf). It seems to be okay now, but I wonder if we might want to add another link to it from the Resources page? When I went looking for it for Valerie, the brochure was really hard to find, even knowing it was there. And we do have a link for the group under Resources but where it says the group, “… maintains a page of Data Citation Resources,” that list doesn’t include our brochure. It looks to me like I could add a new entry but not edit the existing list. Seems like our own brochure should head the list.
