Note: I've also just sent this to the wider IASPM list--

Dear Collective Pop Wisdom,

I'm interested in doing research on the (mainly) jazz-based label
ArtistShare which lets fans help support the funding of an album by
participating in various levels of 'participant' status--some get
videos of rehearsals or works in progress, etc. It's arguably more
beneficial for the artists too as they receive a significant higher
percentage of album sales than they would with a 'traditional' label
(and also sell scores and albums in digital and CD forms).

Time will tell if this model works, but I was just wondering what
precedent this has in the pop and jazz worlds-- have fans helped pay
for album costs upfront before? In the realm of television, I remember
when the TV show Freaks and Geeks was cancelled and the fans started a
campaign to raise money to pay NBC to air more shows.

I'm just trying to think of some parallels in pop-rock-jazz fan
patronage. Any examples from the realm of music history would be
greatly appreciated.

With all best wishes,
Justin

I know these types of requests are becoming more common with film projects.  I've seen this website used to raise funds for a documentary.  Looks like it offers options for music and other arts:  http://www.indiegogo.com

Best,

Dave

Another site for these sorts of projects is Inkubato. A film about Berlin's Bar 25 was financed this way last fall: http://www.inkubato.com/en/projekte/4c8c96cc2fc9a

I know of one country artist who used www.kickstarter.com to try to
fund a tour. I looked at the website just now and it seems that there
have been a number of successful projects.
