Ph.D. Assistantship in Urban Biodiversity Modeling 

(Fall 2022 & Spring 2023) 

 

The Department of Plant Science and Landscape architecture (PSLA) at University of Connecticut invites applications for a PhD-level assistantship starting in Fall 2022. The successful applicant will work under the guidance of Dr. Sohyun Park and to pursue a doctoral degree. The student will primarily be involved in a research project that aims to develop a socio-ecological model to assess urban ecosystem services, urban biodiversity,  and land use change. The sutdent will also have an opporunity to participate in the final year of three-year research project funded by the USDA Capacity Hatch Multi-State grant focusing on public green spaces and individual and community well-being. The position will offer a cross-disciplinary resesarch opporrunity through collaboration with university scientists, municipalities, NGOs, and local communities.  

 

Key Responsibilities & Opportunities:  

  • Conduct research on issues relating to urban biodiversity  
  • Gain experience in modeling the consequences of land use decisions and biodiversity conservation practices on urban ecosystem services in the context of a changing climate. 
  • Conduct literature reviews and build appropriate skillsets  
  • Assist or lead in developing a scholarly approach through professsional presentations, publications, reviewed journal articles, academic presentations, technical reports and outreach materials, and other project deliverabes.  
  • Train and supervise undergradaute research assistants  

 

Qualifications: 

  • Earned (or anticipated graduation before the start date) Master’s degree in computer, information, and data science, geosciences, environmental science, landscape architecture, or related field.   
  • Ability to conduct research independently  
  • Experience with data science and machine learning technology  
  • Experience with modeling geospatial data and spatial statistics 
  • Experience with modeling ecosystem services and urban biodiversity  
  • Experience with graphic design and data visualization  
  • Experience working with regional climate and land use data, especially Lidar data  
  • Experience with computational programming, particularly R or python 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills  

 

Start Date: August 29, 2022.
