For quite a while now (since shortly after this list was created) someone's first email to the list was quarantined until a human (me) verified that the message was not spam (at which point I would both let it through to the list and mark the person as able to get through immediately in the future). I set this up because we were initially getting some spam and I figured that, while people's filters are probably pretty good, there was no need for this mailing list to be an additional vector for spam in our lives (I'm sure we all have enough of those as is).
Of course, having a human be responsible for even the initial message getting through to the list has put me in the critical path for people getting help at times. While the rate of messages sent to this list is very low, my personal latency is at times quite high when it comes to processing them. I feel bad about that and would be happy if it weren't the case.
As such, I'm going to try opening the list back up and see what happens. I have hopes that 1) technology to detect spammers has gotten better and 2) this list will no longer be on spammer's radar. Of course I may be overestimating the good guys in the former case and underestimating the bad guys in the latter case. If spam becomes a problem for this list I'll revert to the previous configuration.
Consider yourselves warned,
James
