Dear Dr. Kondo,

Is a pleasure to us to invite the Working Group on Geoarchaeology to participate to the SYMPOSIUM “GEOARCHAEOLOGY, MAN, AND TERRTORY”, part of the XIX Congreso Nacional de Arqueología Argentina (http://www.congresoscnaa.org/web/index.php), to be held in San Miguel de Tucumán (Argentina) from 8 to 12 august 2016.

The conveners of the Symposium are Dr. María Marta Sampietro Vattuone1 (samp...@tucbbs.com.ar), Dr. Jimena Roldán1, and Dr. José Luis Peña Monné2 (1Laboratory of Geoarchaeology (UNT), and CONICET (Argentina), 2 University of Zaragoza (Spain)).

The symposium has the sponsorship of the Grupo de Estudios Geoarqueológicos de Latinoamérica (GEGAL) and the Working Group on Geoarchaeology (Geoarchaeology WG) of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG).

DEAD LINE to send abstracts and/or short papers is 15th november 2015, through the web age of the Congress (information for authors is attached).

All papers will be published, after referee revision in the electronic publication of the Congress, nevertheless we are organizing the possibility to publish the most relevant contributions in a special volume of an international journal.

Previous to the congress week, we are also organizing a three days Geoarchaeological Field Trip across Calchaquí Valleys, we will have more information about that soon.

Kind regards,
Dr. Maria Marta Sampietro Vattuone

PROPOSAL
GEOARCHAEOLOGY, MAN, AND TERRITORY
It is a long way since the first geoarchaeological researches were made at South America and especially in Argentina since middle ‘80s, when the discipline began to strengthen. One of the factors that makes this discipline so useful is it interdisciplinary character. Starting from its most strict definition as “the use of methods and techniques from geosciences to solve archaeological problems”, it is possible to join and articulate a wide range of information involving geomorphology, biology, geology, chemistry, physics, cartography, and human sciences among others.
One of the strengths of Geoarchaeology is its ability to provide information to reconstruct the relationship between man and the environment along time. That feature makes the Geoarchaeology a dynamic and explanatory discipline able to tell us about the natural and anthropic processes involved in the development of the landscapes. The Geoarchaeology permits the use of multiple proxies to achieve complex illustrations, joining a wide range of information. This makes necessary to generate adequate frameworks for the discussion and integration of methodological questions and research experiences from several regions. This is especially important considering the diversity of environments and cultural expressions characteristics of the Americas that normally exceed present frontiers.
On this framework we propose the Symposium GEOARCHAEOLOGY, MAN, AND TERRITORY which objectives are:
- To bring together active researchers from the discipline generating a space for the discussion and sharing of ideas, methods, and experiences.
- To encourage the study of complex subjects as: (a) the reconstruction of settlement areas; (b) changes in the configuration and use of the territories; (c) environmental disruptions, resources availability and cultural adaptations; (d) anthropic and natural changes related with territorial configuration; (e) consequences of environmental changes and anthropic impact over landscape; (f) geoarchaeological models and their application in archaeology; (g) agropastoral practices effects over soils and vegetation; (h) natural disasters and human occupation; (i) heritage conservation and geoarchaeology.
- To favor the discussion about the diverse archaeometric techniques available to geoarchaeological research.
- To integrate new methodological researches and trends from other countries.
Finally, we consider that this opportunity will be a valuable space for the exposition and plural interdisciplinary debate to enrich our approach capacity and interpretative ability of the archaeological record.
