Dear colleagues

(please distribute widely)

I would like to invite you to join the international workshop entitled Implications of Late Quaternary Sea Level Changes on the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea Coasts” which we organize with a great enthusiasm in the framework of Turkish-German Science Year 2013-2014. The event will be held at Şile (a holiday resort town on the Black Sea cost, about 60 km north of Istanbul) from 31st August to 6 th of September, 2014 as a joint activity of the Işık and Ardahan universities in Turkey. We hope through this meeting that many researchers and scientists may get a change to share their scientific findings, ideas and approaches on the complicated Late Quaternary history of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The main theme of the workshop, within the scope of the recent studies, is to provide a stimulating platform on “sedimentological, geomorphological and archaeological inferences obtained from the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea coasts with regard to Late Quaternary sea-level changes”.

Contributions on the following specific issues are welcome:

·         Identification and precision of indicators of sea-level change

·         Late Quaternary fluctuations of the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea

·         The sedimentary fingerprint of events (storms, tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions etc.)

·         Tectonic  controls on the late Quaternary seal level changes in the Mediterranean,  the Aegean, Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea coasts

·         The rise and fall of coastal cities

·         The beach rock debate

·         Anthropogenic forcing and human landscapes

·         Advances in dating techniques

Optionally, during 3th-6th of September 2014 designated for field trips, the participants will also have the opportunity to visit various coastal outcrops typical of the Mediterranean and Black Sea as well as ancient settlements and harbours in the western Anatolian coastal region of Turkey.

Please visit website for farther details. Please find attached the first circular and call for papers.

Hoping with great enthusiasm to see you in Istanbul…

Truly yours
