Dear all,
At the upcoming EAA
conference in Maastricht, we are hosting a session the
implementation and of geophysics in archaeology. The main focus
lies on how to critically introduce and fully integrate
geophysical prospection into the archaeological workflow, both in
research as well as in a developer-led context.
The session is entitled: “Method,
theory and interpretation: towards an integrated framework
for archaeological geophysics”. Session ID 367
(Please find the full session abstract below), and will be
associated with session no. 331 on general archaeological
prospecting (entitled: Silent
traces of the past. Interpreting
results from archaeological prospection. Organised
by Eelco Rensinck & Christoph
Keller).
Further general information is available on the conference website.
Feel free to pass this along and if any further questions arise, do not hesitate to contact me!
Best regards,
Philippe

Session 367: Method, theory and
interpretation: towards an integrated framework for
archaeological geophysics.
The application of geophysical prospection
methods in archaeology has increased considerably over the past
decade. A broad range of near-surface geophysical techniques has
become a standard part of the archaeological toolbox. In
landscape studies, particularly, these methods are surging, as
novel approaches allow the non-invasive investigation of
increasingly larger areas, at ever finer resolutions.
Consequentially, geophysical prospection methods are leaving
their mark on archaeological practice and theory, and are
already affecting interpretive archaeological frameworks.
In this session, we call to field archaeologists, geophysical prospectors, researchers and heritage professionals for contributions on current trends in archaeo-geophysical prospecting and their implementation into archaeological research frameworks. Specific focus will be on the analytical potential of geophysical datasets for scientific- as well as developer-led archaeology, and to which extent the (non-)application of geophysical techniques is warranted here. Debates on the interpretive advantages and limitations of these non-invasive approaches are welcomed, together with case studies that exemplify how geophysical methods can be used as an integral part of the archaeological work-flow. Presenters are encouraged to go beyond technological advancements, and critically assess the methodological and theoretical effects of archaeo-geophysics on current archaeology. In that context, this session aims to define the impact of geophysical prospection methods on shaping, preserving and disseminating archaeology for the years to come.
Dear all,
the new deadline for the EAA abstract submission has been extended until the 22 of March.
For anyone who was planning to apply there still time left.
For those who have already submitted an abstract please check on your page that it was submitted correctly. Some people faced some issues with the procedure!
Please, find attached the session content. Feel free to circulate.
The organisers,
