Research Fellow GEO310R Ref 1449521
The School of Geosciences, University of Aberdeen, is seeking a post-doctoral Research Fellow to work within an international interdisciplinary team to study the long-term environmental signatures of Arctic animal husbandry in three sites across Eurasia using a range of geoarchaeological methods. The Fellow will be responsible for working together with an interdisciplinary, international team to survey and sample sites of existing or past animal husbandry. The sites will be in remote areas of Fennoscandia and the Russian Federation. The research will focus on developing a new suite of methods to identify organic and inorganic residues associated with reindeer and other ruminants using soil lipid analysis, multi-element analysis, and other techniques. The chemical analysis will be contextualized by the study of site structures surveyed by the research team, enhanced by magnetic susceptibility testing, which will be the responsibility of the successful candidate, as well as integration with botanical, palynological, and ethnohistorical research, which will be the responsibility of other members of the team. The successful candidate is expected to have good knowledge of organic chemistry and be aware of standard methods for detecting lipid biomarkers in soils, including gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The candidate should have experience working in a chemistry laboratory environment. It would also be extremely beneficial if the candidate has prior experience of fieldwork in boreal forest and/or tundra environments. Knowledge of the Fennoscandian region and/or Russian Federation would be an asset, as would a command of one or more languages spoken in these regions.
