Has anyone used an ACRA SAM/DEC card with any type of Express Card to
PCMCIA adaptor on a newer laptop with any success? It is getting
increasingly harder to find any new laptops that have PCMCIA slots. I
have found a few but they don’t meet my requirements so I was
wondering if anyone has had any success with one of these adapters.

Hi Ken-

Although I've never tried an Express Card to PCMCIA Adaptor, the Elan line
of PCI to PCMCIA Adapters has worked for us with the SAMDEC. Also, if you
contact Curtiss Wright, I think they still sell laptops that are configured
to work with your SAMDEC.

Probably way to late to be helpful..

I am currently banging my head on the same vein of problem. My development laptop has failed its HDD and my IT department wants to replace it with a generic consumer laptop.

Panasonic semi-rugged toughbooks (the CF-53) have a PCMCIA slot, and a real serial port. (an issue for me since I also need to deal with programming a TTC CDAU)

Might I suggest a different approach? If funding will stretch, you may want to consider adding an ETH101 or an ethernet-enabled BCU (the 105 ?? not sure )
I am transitioning away from PCM based programming and data extraction, over to Ethernet.

The other alternative is the SAM/DEC/008 if it ever reaches production - USB based SAMDEC. But I believe it is in development limbo. Besides, for the cost of the SAM/DEC/008, you can get a BCU/105 or an ETH/101.

Just offering an alternative perspective since I am in the middle of the same problems myself.

Regards,
Pete
