Hello all,

Does anyone know how to sync the PC clock to GPS time?

I've found a utility on the net that syncs the PC clock to a generic NMEA GPS time reciever, but I don't have a GPS source to test it.

Has anyone done this before and if yes, what utilities and hardware are you using?

Thanks in advance,
Jim

Hey Jim,

I think we might be doing what you want. We have a GPS receiver that feeds
an NTP server. Our PCs then sync to that. If you need a GPS receiver to
try your solution you found I'm sure you could borrow ours for a bit. It's
down in Jon's office.

Thanx Greg ;)

I'll come check it out next time I'm at 1408.

The person who originally asked about this has a laptop (no connection to
the net)... so I was hoping some sort of cheap GlobalSat BU-353 USB puck and
utility combo,
Jim

I used to do this at home for accurate transmission logs for amateur radio contests.  Unfortunately, many consumer grade GPSs no longer have any external output.  I use an old Garmin GPS 3+ with a serial port cable connected to my PC. I think this is the software I use (http://www.visualgps.net/nmeatime/default.htm) but I'm not 100% positive.

Check out the new line of Garmin Sensors. The pucks are available in USB now and up to 10Hz update with WAAS or GPS/GLONASS accessibility. GLONASS went global last year so having both the US and Russian GPS system for tracking can be an advantage. For $100 you can go USB or Bluetooth..
