The following is from Edge Wade, a top notch birder from Missouri.  This is serious folks and a number of fronts.  Maybe an additional concern would be the president that this would set for future similar decisions???   Get your thinking cap on and follow up on this

God Bless.

To everyone who's been to Salineño Wildlife Preserve in Starr Co. Texas or who might ever want to go.  The newest assault is for 20 miles of border wall right through the property.

Even though the current Administration has said that they are not proposing any new border wall, this proposal is coming from Customs & Border Patrol.  The proposed project involves parking lots and lights and destroying all of the trees along the river and blocking off access of wildlife to the river. It would destroy the sanctuary.

Attached is a link to the article about it in the Lower Rio Grande Valley newspaper.  Included below the link is how/where you can write comments.  Please note they've made the comment period ridiculously short. They're only taking comments until September 15th

Customs & Border Patrol is accepting comments until Sept. 15, which can be emailed to RGVCo...@cbp.dhs.gov.

You may want to include how many times you've been there, or summarize the eBird hotspot data, and/or discuss the economic impact, or anything else you can think of about why this area is special.

Thank you, now write them!  And pass this on to people you know who may not be on Mobirds.

Hi all,

This is very sad news. Is there data to suggest there are a lot of illegal crossings at the location?

When Dean Hester and I were at Salineno in 2019 we witnessed an illegal crossing. A long boat with an outboard motor crossed from Mexico, and was quickly met by a large van. The longboat was filled with bags, who knows what was in them. I can't remember if the person in the boat went back to Mexico with the boat or just ditched it. It felt uncomfortable for sure. We just acted like we were going about our business birding.

I'll certainly voice that the birding location is both a sanctuary for birds and brings business to the local town. We definitely got some food and drinks in town after we were done, it was HOT!

It might be a "crossing hotspot", though. I certainly don't support a wall, but it seems like the other options, aside from a wall, may be few. People are savvy though, they will find other ways to cross even if Salineno is destroyed. So can the proposers provide data that the wall will even be effective?

Good birding,

It’s been a long time since I’ve been there, so remind me - is this a state or federal reserve?

Actually, the Salineno Wildlife Preserve, where the feeding stations are set up, are outside the NWR and is owned by the Valley Land Fund. Much of the area is private property.
