Earlier this spring, an IOU woman (whose name I don't recall) shared about visiting Kiowa Marsh near Early IA, and what a treasure it was. I was floored, because I drive through/by Early at least once a week and had no clue about it. This morning there was time to make a brief stop, and I will definitely be back to see who is there as the seasons change!
Two lovely surprises: sandhill cranes calling as I pulled in, tho I never located them. And a flock of little brown peeps with white bellies & medium-ish bills scurrying and probing in the mud flats - peeps are hard for me to ID but with Merlin's help they might be semi-palmated or western sandpipers??
Tons of kildeer and Canadas and Canada babies;
A yellow-headed blackbird male flew in front of me as I pulled in;
lots of rough-wing swallows;
a green heron flyover;
a kingfisher;
2 duckling flotillas, one led by a mom wood duck and one by a pied-bill grebe;
and an eastern towhee on the grassy northside.
Nothing earth-shaking, but things that I see infrequently, and it made my day!
