This morning at Beaver Bottoms wetland  (a private wetland) just a mile south of Granger, I checked our shallow-water wetlands, which were dry last fall.  The snow-melt has put a couple inches of water in all the ponds, although it won’t last long if western IA drought conditions persist. The only ducks were 5 Wood Ducks that were sitting in front of a nest box.  A trio of Trumpeters did a fly-over, followed by a pair of Sandhill Cranes which are our likely resident birds. Along Xavier Road, on the adjoining Brenton Slough property there were plenty of Canadas, along with flocks of Whitefronts, a handful of Mallards, and one little flock of GW Teal. The backwaters barely have any water, and the area just isn’t as attractive to waterfowl this spring. Also sighted were FOY Kingfisher and RW Blackbirds along the road.
