FAPA: Excluding Taiwan Weakens UN, Emboldens China

As the UN marks its 80th anniversary, Taiwan’s 23 million people remain unfairly excluded. FAPA President Dr. Su-Mei Kao stated that
denying Taiwan a UN seat undermines the institution’s credibility, despite Taiwan’s record of global contributions in health, disaster relief, and development.
A Lowy Institute report highlights Beijing’s growing abuse of the UN system, using its influence to advance authoritarian interests and restrict Taiwan’s international space. Through coercion and economic
pressure, China has pushed the UN to delegitimize Taiwan, bar its citizens from UN premises, and misrepresent Resolution 2758 to falsely claim Taiwan as part of the PRC.
Resolution 2758 never addressed Taiwan’s sovereignty, yet Beijing continues to exploit it to justify aggression. Dr.
Kao applauded U.S. bipartisan efforts, such as the Taiwan Relations Reinforcement Act, which push back against China’s distortions and affirm that Taiwan’s democracy must not be silenced or excluded from the global community.
