It looks like Penguicon will be in the same hotel, the Dearborn Hyatt, April 19, 20, & 21. We can move forward with a lot of things that were in a holding pattern while the hotel confirmed lingering questions about its future-- it will not be demolished or change staff (though it might not have the same name).

This year, the deadline to give Krunal Desai and Tim Slovik the names and descriptions of your events will be March 8. I can't speak for Tim, but it's a good bet that the earlier you submit it, the more flexibility you can get about the day and time of your event. Even just letting Krunal know that you *probably* want to do an event about [ vague topic title here ] is useful, and the more details you can estimate (duration, # participants, material costs), the earlier, the better it will be for you, the attendees, Tim as head of scheduling, Krunal as head of Tech/DIY, me as the schedule book editor-- basically everybody involved. It's worth your time to start brainstorming now and reach out early.

http://penguicon.info/doku.php/staffmembers is the page to view the names and contact info for people working for the convention. One of my jobs is to be a liaison to i3Detroit. This is an active, not passive, role. I will actively try to predict what information the convention and i3Detroit members might need, look for presenters, and push information to you about the requirements and benefits of your participation. Please always talk to me if you don't hear back in a timely fashion from a conrunner who has a "sudden attack of life" or has an email problem or something. The more people (Tim, Krunal, me) who you CC, the better.

The i3Detroit presence at Penguicon is going to be awesome once again! I'm looking forward to it!

Wait, what?

Going back ten years, Notacon has always been the middle weekend in
April, and Penguicon happens two weeks later. It's made for a fun
start to the season. Now Penguicon moves two weeks earlier, to overlap
Notacon's weekend, and forces us all to choose? Why?!?

For as long as I've been going to Penguicon, it's been trying to
convince the world that it has an honest-to-goodness tech track, no
really, not just a sci-fi con! Last year saw significant strides
toward that goal, but now it's competing with the midwest's best-
established tech con, and I don't see that ending well for anyone.
It's splitting the audience, which may not be a big deal (the events
are 160 miles apart, after all), but it's also splitting the potential
speakers, and that's likely to hurt Penguicon's fledgling tech track
quite a bit. I'll be curious to see how this shakes out.

Good luck, Penguicon, but mid-April is Notacon weekend. Sorry. I'll be
there in spirit.

I sadly have to echo what Nate said. While I love Penguicon, work
demands I attend Notacon.
