I'm sure there must be a bellcore standard for this, but I can't find
it right now. Likewise, you'd think some electricians would have a
thing, but my google-fu is weak this morning.

GReen and GRey/GRay could be confused, so I use GreeN and SLate.
Likewise, BLue and BLack are ambiguous, so I use BlUe and BlacK. But
this seems unusual; I see BLue all over the place. Pisses me off. And
for some reason, I like WT, YL, and OG more than WH, YE, and OR, but I
can't explain why.

Can anyone point to a standards-body standard for this? I've found
several "what we use in-house" charts and codes, but nothing with ANSI
or ISO or IEC or whatever behind it.

ANSI/TIA/EIA-606-A-2002  I'm on my phone now, but when I get back to my desk, I'll dig up something better for you.  There's an actual table in the spec that can be referenced.

It's because your brain likes consonants more than vowels.

Oh, and slate is the standard, for exactly the reason you mentioned.  Also, BLue and BlacK, although I have seen quite a few FNGs see BL and think its black.  For that reason, I don't know why they didn't go with CHarcoal, or even COal.

You may also want to reference TIA/EIA 568 and 598.  To the best of my knowledge, there is no actual standard on the two letter codes though.

Here's the IEC 60757, which uses BU for blue, BK for black, and BN for brown (leaving no room for ambiguity): http://www.hitechcontrols.com/cables/technical-information/48-color-abbreviations.html

red RT rt RD

Yet they use gray....

I tried to pull that spec sheet up, but all I could find was places to buy it.  Any place it is viewable free?

Yeah, it seems a bit extreme to charge $25 (or more) for what is
probably no more than a list of colors, names, and abbreviations. This
place seems to have it:
http://www.jugarcorp.com/iec-60757-t-18400.html. However, I'm guessing
that site isn't exactly legal; the welcome banner on the forum says
"Welcome Everybody. Just feel free to download everything for free."
So, you might get a side of PDF exploit with your colorful dish.

Here's the same info from the German language Wikipedia (but the
abbreviations are in English--all hail the dominance of English!):
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farb-Kurzzeichen

And, I've now spent way too much time on this side excursion. ;)
