ANSI/TIA/EIA-606-A-2002 I'm on my phone now, but when I get back to my desk, I'll dig up something better for you. There's an actual table in the spec that can be referenced.

It's because your brain likes consonants more than vowels.
Oh, and slate is the standard, for exactly the reason you mentioned. Also, BLue and BlacK, although I have seen quite a few FNGs see BL and think its black. For that reason, I don't know why they didn't go with CHarcoal, or even COal.
You may also want to reference TIA/EIA 568 and 598. To the best of my knowledge, there is no actual standard on the two letter codes though.
Color | German Abbreviation | Abbreviation acc. to IEC 60757 | |
new | old | ||
black | SW | sw | BK |
brown | BR | br | BN |
red | RT | rt | RD |
orange | OR | or | OG |
yellow | GE | ge | YE |
green | GN | gn | GN |
blue | BL | bl | BU |
violet | VI | vi | VT |
gray | GR | gr | GY |

Yet they use gray....
I tried to pull that spec sheet up, but all I could find was places to buy it. Any place it is viewable free?

Here's the same info from the German language Wikipedia (but the
abbreviations are in English--all hail the dominance of English!):

And, I've now spent way too much time on this side excursion. ;)
