Oracle bitmap indexes for temporal queries

Hi - Now that we have over 3 billion fact table records temporal queries in particular are taking much longer than they used to.  Has anyone got any experience using bitmap indexes (in Oracle or otherwise) to improve i2b2 performance?   Other tips for improving temporal query response times?
