Ron said that 7 deadly sins are in the bible.  I also said that Dante wrote about 7 deadly sins.  We were both right, but the 7 deadly sins first appeared in the bible.

1.       Pride-Romans 12:3 1 Peter 5:5

2.       Greed-Exodus 20:17

3.       Lust-Romans 1:26,27

4.       Envy-James 4:5

5.       Gluttony-Deuteronomy 21:18-21

6.       Wrath/Anger-Jonah 4:1-11, Genesis 4:5,8

7.       Sloth-Proverbs 19:15

The bible references are not always clearly related to the deadly sins.  If you want to be scared, read or look at paintings about Divine Comedy which was started by Dante 1308 and completed 1320.  Divine Comedy is considered as the greatest work of Italian literature.

Thanks, Tom for clarifying those sins.  I remember one of them was Gluttony.  I guess many Americans have problem with eating too much food since there is a plenty of food at almost all grocery stores, plus many restaurants being served.  For me, I am trying to lose my weight as possibly I can.   I am hoping someday Americans will share plenty of food to another countries where they are badly needed.

Last Sunday Ron projected 7 deadly sins from his projector.  We both cannot remember the Bible sources, but I told him that I remember the sources being scattered in the Bible. and that I had covered the 7 deadly sins in my prior IDCF group.

I think we need to understand that the Bible never mentions the word, seven deadly sins.  This is the Christian tradition because of the number seven. The early church {Catholic, I think] classified these sins as cardinal sins and taught that they could not be forgiven. However, we know that those “seven” deadly sins can be forgiven  but this doesn’t mean we are free to practice these sins. Biblically, the only sin that cannot be forgiven is complete rejection of God’s grace which is outright rebellion against God, also known as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

Anyway, how about this passage that does not 100% matched with the “seven” deadly sins: Proverbs 6:16-19  (NKJV)

16 These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
17 A proud look, A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
18 A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
19 A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.

The other Bible passage mentions more than those “seven” deadly sins.

Galatians 5

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,

20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,

21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand,

just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Bill,

You are right that the Bible never mentions seven deadly sins, but I also said that in my original subject.  I said that the Bible references are not always clearly related to the deadly sins, and that Dante wrote about Seven Deadly Sins in Dante’s Divine Comedy considered as the greatest work of Italian literature.

You are also right that “seven deadly sins” as used by Dante can be forgiven.  Right away, I can see that “Seven Deadly Sins” is misleading or incorrect because these words are found in Dante’s work, not the Bible.  In my original subject, I was only trying to trace “Seven Deadly Sins” to the Bible scattering them all over the place because there was no such complete listing in the Bible.

Proverbs 6:16-19 has almost nothing similar to “Seven Deadly Sins”.  Then you began to compare apples with oranges by using adultery, fornications, murders, etc, (Bible sins) to Dante’s “Seven Deadly Sins”.  Also, you were trying to reconcile the Bible to Dante instead of the other way.

I think we are all getting confused with trying to reconcile “Seven Deadly Sins” to the Bible.  If I am going to do this again, I would just use “Seven Vices” or something else because Dante was not talking about Bible sins.  I would also try to find better Bible verses, but there would still be no complete listing of “seven vices”.  Also, we should make it clear that we are only trying to find examples in the Bible to compare with Dante.  Regardless, the Bible is more important than Dante.  Tom
