Twitter Storm
A recent Center for American Progress report on homelessness among transgender young people reviews evidence that at least one in five transgender young people have experienced homelessness. More broadly, we know that housing instability and poverty have a significant impact on LGBT communities. Approximately 40 percent of all homeless youth identify as LGBT. Additionally, 20 percent of LGBT people living alone have annual incomes of less than $12,000, compared to 17 percent of non-LGBT people living alone, and transgender individuals are four times more likely to have incomes under $10,000 per year compared to the general population – despite having higher rates of education.
To draw attention to the intersections between poverty, discrimination, and youth homelessness, TalkPoverty and LGBT Progress will be hosting a twitter storm on Wednesday 2/11 from 3-4pm ET. We invite you to join the conversation using the hashtag #LGBTpoverty to explore what we already know about the cause and impact of poverty and housing instability within young LGBT communities and highlight potential solutions.
