When I try to play any video on flickr including my own as well as anyone else's,
I get the message.

"the media could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported".

I have the latest firefox version and I have windows XP and it all started after I connected a mobius camera to the pc to try and view the footage on the camera's micro sim card.
The camera kept disconnecting my wi fi when I connected the camera to my pc. I had to put the card into a card reader due to the fact the pc wouldn't read the card whilst in the camera to play the video.
Now I have this awful problem of not being able to view videos in flickr.
My connection seems fine.
I've got the latest upgrade on firefox browser.
And I cleared all my history and cookies etc from the web browser.

The videos will not play, not mine or anybody else's and that message comes up.

I too am getting video error message: "The media could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported", as reported by others above.

My device: Windows 10, browsers Microsoft Edge & Microsoft IE 11 (same fault experienced in both browsers).

I'm led to believe Flickr has moved away from using the old Flash video player, which has to be, in the long term, a positive step forward. I presume the new mechanism requires an HTLM 5 compliant platform. My device/OS/browser configuration should meet those needs.

I suspect the issue is, at least in part, video format dependent. All videos from my modern digital SLR are playing correctly; videos from a considerably older digital compact fail (see my Flickr profile for camera model info).

I have also noticed that the Flickr Advanced Search mechanism fails to find the videos shot on my compact digital camera as 'Video', but does find videos shot on my digital SLR camera. This would seem to indicate the Flickr web site is able to identify what it is able to play, and what it can not. That being the case, although potentially a thorny issue, I believe the user base would benefit from such information.

I notice this issue was first raised on the Flickr Help Forum a couple of months ago now, and that there has been no response from Flickr Support. I think it would be really useful if Flickr opened an active feedback channel for significant changes to its operation such as this change to video playback. That would constitute a significant improvement in customer relations. In the meantime, it would seem we remain in the dark.

Robert Slack:

It is interesting that the video in your stream directly to the left of the problematic one will play properly using the HTML5 player and it appears that video was taken with the same camera and uploaded on the same day.

It is also interesting that I can get the problematic video to play using the flash slideshow (using a browser that supports flash):

Is there a way to filter to show just videos on time line and/or photos?
Advanced search on a photostream can show just video or exclude video if you would like. Go to your photostream:
www.flickr.com/photos/ian_traynor/
Click the magnifying glass just upper right of your photos (not the one in the search box higher up). If you click the correct magnifying glass, you will notice that ian_traynor/Photos appears in blue in the searchbox higher up. Do not type anything into the search box, hit enter on your keypad.

a shortcut to just videos would be to type "video" into the searchbox and hit enter, but if you do this, some photos may not get filtered out if they have "video" in the description field or as a tag

With no keyword in the searchbox, hitting enter on your keypad will take you to the search results page with only your photos appearing on the page. At this point click "advanced", upper right of the search results page. Notice a panel opens with lots of info, find "content" Notice that "Photos" and "Videos" are both blue and have a check to the right. You can uncheck photos and see just your videos or you can uncheck videos and they will be removed from the search results. You can open the "relevant" drop down menu and order the search return in other ways, including by date taken or date uploaded.

I don't think you can see just your videos in your Camera Roll.

taken in feb 2014 but says taken in Sept 15. Perhaps some video formats do not work as well?

If the date taken is not included in the EXIF uploaded with the video, then flickr cannot show the date taken and will replace that with the uploaded date.

Your video link in your original post is giving me the 404 warning (meaning it might be a private video in tour stream).

To specify the width and height, add w=n (width) and h=n (height) to the shortcode. For example, [ flickr video=2402990826 w=200 h=150] will embed a video in 200 x 150 px. (Do not include the space after the first bracket.)

I took a short video with my iPhone, along with a few photos. When I went to the flickr app I saw the status of it uploading pictures....and it sure looked like it uploaded the video (just guessing from the time it took to complete the upload).

However, when I look at my camera roll I don't see the video (online OR in the flickr app) so I'm wondering if it really does upload/backup my videos??

Am I missing something? A setting or something? Please help.

No, the videos I'm talking about are in the range of 10-30 seconds. Again, a test video I shot LOOKS like it uploads to flickr - I see the auto uploadr working after I only shoot 1 short video. But then it just isn't found anywhere in my account online or in the mobile apps. Odd.

Robert Barone:
You can upload longer videos, but Flickr will only play the first 3 minutes.
Anyone maintaining an old "Pro" account can upload a video longer than three minutes in length. They can also retrieve that video in it's original format. the flickr video player will play only the first three minutes of that video. Anyone with a free or "Ad-Free" flickr account uploading a video to flickr that is longer than three minutes will have that video truncated at the three minute mark and the rest of that video will be discarded by flickr. They can retrieve the first three minutes of that video in flickr's video player format which is currently MP4/H264.

There must be a way to create a photo thumbnail for videos in your photostream rather than the standard gray

Flickr uses the first frame in your timeline. However, if you use Movie Maker (for example, and it could be different for other video editors) you might still get a black frame depending on how you handle editing. If I use movie maker transitions for example, I will get a black frame when I upload to Flickr regardless of how it looks on my computer and even if my leading frame is not black. You have to work around this. It's a bit of work, but once you get the hang of it, it's ok. If you use movie maker and have trouble, I can help you. Just send me a flickr mail. But movie maker is all I know so I can't help with other programs. Single clips should not upload with a black frame.

Users can organize their Flickr photos into "albums" (formerly "sets") which are more flexible than the traditional folder-based method of organizing files, as one photo can belong to one album, many albums, or none at all. Flickr provides code to embed albums into blogs, websites and forums. Flickr albums represent a form of categorical metadata rather than a physical hierarchy. Geotagging can be applied to photos in albums,[56] and any albums with geotagging can be related to a map using imapflickr. The resulting map can be embedded in a website.[57] Flickr albums may be organized into "collections", which can themselves be further organized into higher-order collections.
