Hi,

Is there a way to print the page with the annotations made with hypothes.is getting printed?
I think this is an useful feature.

Thanks,
Dhawal

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your email.

The way you suggested works, but seems a little cumbersome.
What I want my printed pdf of an annotated page to look like is attached as a screenshot.

As a person just about to start my PhD degree, a printed page of all my annotations will be extremely useful. It allows me to work on a paper online, wherever and just print it out before I walk into a group meeting. It can also be extremely useful when presenting papers during group readings wherein I have a copy of the annotated paper for everyone allowing everyone to follow me without having to find the section in the paper.

The way I envision it - the hypothes.is overlay that comes on a page when the extension button is clicked has an export as pdf/print button. Clicking on this button allows for the page to be printed with annotations - nice, simple and easy. I'm praying that executing this isn't too difficult and that you see it to be a good use case to put this into production. :)

Please let me know if you need any more clarification or detail on this.

Thanks,
Dhawal

Hello Dhawal,

I'm afraid we do not have a convenient tool for printing the page with the annotations overlaid on top or as footnotes at the moment. However, what you can do is:

1. Print the page itself, with the highlights overlaid and then:
2. Go to https://hypothes.is/stream and search for uri:<link to page> , eg. "uri:http://example.com" to get a page displaying a list of all the annotations on that page along with their quotes, which you can then print.

Can you explain a little more about what you would like to do with the printed result, as this might help us plan future improvements to Hypothesis?

Kind Regards,
Rob

Hi again Rob,

Sorry, I realize now that my previous email wasn't clear enough.

So, here's another attempt -- when I highlight using hypothesis, it should mark the selected text when printed (as in the screenshot on the previous email - that screenshot was taken when hypothesis was active on the page and not using any print feature). When I use the annotate functionality, it would be great if the annotation could go into the side margin across the text on the page that has been highlighted (something like what happens when you add a comment on Adobe Reader, there's sort of a chat bubble on the text highlighted which contains the annotation). As of now, when I use the print after activating hypothesis on the page, neither of the two above happen. When hypothesis is active, I can see the highlight on the page and the annotations when I slide over the hypothesis overlay.

I'm hoping that this gives you a clearer picture. Please let me know if there's still something unclear, I'll be happy to explain further.

Most of the papers that I read are available in PDF! More than 95% of them, I'd say.

Cheers,
Dhawal

Hello Dhawal,

Thank-you for the context. Just so I understand, the attached screenshot has the highlights displayed on top of the content, but the actual comments associated with them are not visible in it. In other words, the screenshot is what you get if you use the browser's Print functionality after activating Hypothesis on the page?

What I wanted to clarify is whether you are primarily interested in getting a version of the document with the highlights overlaid on it or a printed list of all the annotations on the page (something that looks a bit like a print-friendly version of https://hypothes.is/stream) or a combination of both of those? Lastly, are most of the papers you read available only in PDF form or are they usually available in an HTML format as well?

Kind Regards,
Rob

Thank-you for the detailed response Dhawal, this has been very helpful. I've added it to the notes we keep on features that users would like to have in future.

Kind Regards,
Rob
