I had installed this extension in Firefox and Chrome years ago and tried to use it. I cam back to it recently and found the same issues.

1) I constantly have to login to the account via the extension i.e. my login does not seem to stick even in the same browser session

2) Is there no way of having the extension default to creating annotations or highlights in a Private group rather than Public? Is there no way if you have a bunch of highlights already sitting in a public group to change the group to a Private group?

Hi there,

1) I constantly have to login to the account via the extension i.e. my login does not seem to stick even in the same browser session
My guess is that you're probably (unintentionally) blocking the cookies we need to keep you logged in. You have two options; if neither of these work for you, please let me know. The first method would be to allow third-party cookies. Since the Hypothesis cookies don't come from the website you're on, most browsers treat them like third-party cookies, even if you whitelist them as first-party cookies. If you're blocking all 3rd-party cookies, you're probably blocking our cookies as well.

The other option would be to allow cookies from the extension itself in Chrome. In this case, you'll allow cookies from [*.]bjfhmglciegochdpefhhlphglcehbmek.

2) Is there no way of having the extension default to creating annotations or highlights in a Private group rather than Public?
When you're logged, the default location is wherever you last posted an annotation. So if you post to a private group then the next time you open Hypothesis you'll start off in that private group, and by default you'll post there (until you change it by posting in Public).

Is there no way if you have a bunch of highlights already sitting in a public group to change the group to a Private group
Once you've posted an annotation you can not change the group. However:
  1. You can always edit an annotation and change it so that it's posted to "Only Me". The annotation will still be in the group it started in, but "Only Me" annotations are only visible to you. You can also post to "Only Me" initially, saving yourself a step. Like groups above, once you post to "Only Me" that becomes the default place you'll post until you change it again.
  2. Highlights without annotations always post to "Only Me" in the group you're in.

I hope this helps!

Best,
Michael

Yes it looks like the 3rd party cookies was the issue. When I tried allowing cookies from  [*.]bjfhmglciegochdpefhhlphglcehbmek that did not seem to work. I still had to login to my account on every tab in my browser.

Ok thought there was a way of changing the Group so in this case I deleted the highlights in the public and redid them all over again and made sure they got into the Private Group.

You tried allowing the extension cookies in Chrome and it didn't work? Something else must be blocking our ability to cookies, then, as whitelisting the Chrome extension has worked for others (and for myself).

I'd check your Chrome settings and perhaps other extensions to make sure they're not interfering in some way. You can open a support ticket by writing to sup...@hypothes.is and we can pass along a meeting link so we can have a 1:1 if you want.

Best,
Michael
