Hello,
I wonder whether there is a way to keep students from reading the annotations of other students until I "reveal" the original set of annotations.  This function would allow me to ask students to identify, for instance, the main point of a paragraph without being influenced by what other students have already said/written.  I know the reply/discuss ability of Hypothesis is really great and useful, but I'd like to encourage students to read with their own eyes/minds before engaging in a discursive way with other students.  And I'd like to investigate what they come up with "on their own" so to speak, before plunging into a class discussion of the reading.

Is it possible to do this kind of thing in Hypothesis?

Thanks!

Hi there,

You could have students post their annotations to "Only Me", which makes them private, and then collectively edit their annotations and change where they are posted so that they become visible to the whole group. You'd likely want to have them do this at a predetermined time, and probably only if they don't have too many annotations.

I hope this helps! Please feel free to send any questions my way.

Best,
Michael

Thank you very much for this response.  If they post their annotations to "Only Me," am I, as their teacher, able to read them before the whole class does?

Thanks again,
Bill

Hi Bill,

No, "Only Me" is literal and only the user who created that annotation will see it. Are you using the LMS app? If so, we're looking into the possibility of building some other ways of annotating and I'll record this as a feature request for the LMS app.

Best,
Michael

Hi Michael,
Yes.  We're using the LMS app Blackboard.
Thanks,

Hi Bill,

Thanks! I'm recording this as a feature request to give students a way to create annotations that only instructors can see.

Best,
Michael
