Precious party lovers! We are elated to announce that we’re heading towards our 100th Hypocrite Reader issue! Come celebrate with us at 6pm on Sunday, June 5th in Prospect Park, not far from our birthplace in Brooklyn, New York. We promise you refreshments, reminiscences, and live readings:
  • Ge Gao will be reading from “Separate Fidelities,” which tells the story of a translation gig between Chinese and American inlaws that expands beyond its job description and becomes a kind of cultural mediation.
  • Bailey Trela will be reading from “Prophets in the Wilderness: On Utopian Dreaming in the American Midwest,” which draws lessons from two failed 19th-century attempts at communal living in his hometown of New Harmony, Indiana.
  • Sandow Sinai will be reading from “On Returning Things to their Proper Places,” an investigation into the possibilities for African diasporic national consciousness through the lenses of Jewish exile and permanent revolution.
Come for the readings, stay for the conversation—and, maybe, potentially, possibly, a communal art project, musical interlude, open mic for declamations (have you anything to declaim?), and/or psychic readings using Hypocrite Reader-themed divination cards. This will also be a rare opportunity to meet editor James Baxter, visiting from London!
Heads up that it’s a pretty big park. We’ll most likely set up along the eastern slope the Long Meadow, roughly equidistant between the 2, 3 at Grand Army Plaza station and the Q, S at Prospect Park station. RSVP on our Facebook event.
