Hypnosis isn't about flashing lights or swinging pendulums. A good
hypnotist can put someone in a sort of trance simply by talking to
them. This is referred to as conversational hypnosis. The idea behind
conversational hypnosis is help a person find a solution to his or her
problem by thinking about it and talking about it.
There are generally three steps involved: rapport, confusion, and
suggestion. The first step, rapport, means that the hypnotist must get
the subject to speak and then agree with whatever he or she has to
say. If the subject says, "I'm lost and I don't know what to do," the
hypnotist must then agree by saying, "You're correct. You're lost and
you don't know what to do."
The next step is for the hypnotist to bring confusion into the
conversation. This can sometimes be accomplished with just a single
sentence: "Are you absolutely sure that you're lost and that you won't
ever figure out what to do?"
The third step involves the hypnotist merely making suggestions to the
subject. "You seem like you're finally looking for a way out." Or:
"You've thought of something you might be able to do after all,
haven't you?"
Conversational hypnosis takes practice. No one can preform miracles,
but a conversational hypnotist can come close! Conversational hypnosis
can help with practically any problem: phobias, addiction or bad
habits, low confidence, and so forth.
It's a proven, effective method for lessening the subject's analytical
thinking. It can be performed rather quickly, and can even be used on
oneself! A person can use conversational hypnosis by talking to him or
herself. With enough practice, it'll only take a few moments to do!
