Hypnosis Dieting: When "No" Doesn't Mean "No" We know that hypnosis is
a critical factor in any dieting scheme or diet plan. The reasons are
clear: hypnosis can transcend the critical, analytical level of mind,
and facilitate the acceptance of suggestions, directions and
instructions desired by the person being hypnotized.
This is true whether the person is employing self-hypnosis or is being
hypnotized by a trained hypnotist. The problem with traditional
approaches used in hypnosis, especially by untrained people using self-
hypnosis techniques, is an inadequate understanding of the
relationship between the conscious and sub-conscious mind. Hypnosis
works with the subconscious (unconscious) mind (90% of your mind)
while it bypasses the critical conscious mind. This is very important
because the subconscious accepts direction readily without passing it
through learned "filters" in our conscious minds.
Example: If we directly communicate with our subconscious mind and
make the statement "I will feel energetic, happy and full every time I
eat a healthy meal" our subconscious accepts this statement as "truth"
and starts acting as though it is the expected behavior. On the other
hand, if we "said" the same thing to our conscious mind, we would
instantly think - "I'll probably never be satisfied eating all that
healthy food and anyway I usually get tired and hungry in the
afternoon."
Remember, hypnosis specifically sets the Conscious mind aside and
communicates with the subconscious. Hypnosis cuts through our built-in
habits, strategies and inhibitions, freeing us to develop new, healthy
eating and living patterns. The subconscious is, in a sense, like a
child who resents and rebels at force. A common mistake people make
when communicating directly with the subconscious is this: the
subconscious does not recognize negative words. We can't "make" the
subconscious do anything.
I recently was at a sporting event and a young female athlete was
walking around saying to herself "Don't be nervous, don't be nervous"
over and over again.
Unknowingly, she was reinforcing her nervousness.
I suggested to her coach that she change this pre-event behavior to
say "Be calm, be calm, be calm."
The coach (and the girl) accepted this with a great deal of
skepticism, but they agreed to make the change.
I don't know if this was the reason but she reported that she felt the
best she had ever felt after making this simple change!
Let me state again, it's important: the subconscious doesn't
acknowledge negative words like "No." So, we cannot tell our
subconscious "Don't think about French Fries, don't think about French
Fries, don't think about French Fries" because what we are really
saying to the subconscious mind is: "Think about French Fries, French
Fries, French Fries."
My suggestion for this person's communications with her subconscious
might be something like "I crave a fresh salad" over and over.
Hypnotherapy is the ultimate means of heightening motivation by
programming the subconscious mind to join in the cooperation of your
conscious desires. It just needs to be done right.
That's why I recommend that people use audio hypnosis tapes, CD's or
Mp3 files prepared by trained professionals, when I use them I don't
have be worried about whether or not they are done
right!
