Hi,

I'm having trouble saving my media objects. When I create a point for
my media object and try to save it to a certain category, the save
button does not work. What should I do?

Thank you,
Svetlana Rafailova

Hi Svetlana,

I'm sorry you're having trouble. I tried doing this, and it seemed to
work for me, so I think the problem may be with something specific
about your computer. Are you on a Mac or a PC? If you're on a Mac,
could you try this in Safari, or if you're on a PC, can you try this
in Chrome?

1. Create a new object, but don't click Save.
2. Open the Web Inspector. In Safari, press Command-Option-I. On
Chrome, it's the same if you're on a mac, or Ctrl-Shift-I if you're on
PC.
3. If you don't see the console in the Web Inspector, open it: click
on second the icon in the lower left-hand corner. It's the one that
looks like a greater-than sign (>) pointing at three lines. You should
then see a window with several lines of messages like
"[HyperCities.intelliList] Render List Items"
4. Go back to HyperCities. Click on "Save."
5. Go to the Web Inspector. Copy and paste the messages in the console
into a forum post here. Those messages should help us diagnose the
problem.

Thanks,
David

Dear David,

I am standing here with a student of mine, one of several who is
having the same problem Svetlana reported to you: namely, objects are
not saving to collections. As professor for the class we're in, I have
created collections to which students are unable to save objects; in
approximately half the cases, students have managed a "workaround" in
which they create a new collection and save their objects there. In
the other half of the cases, the computer they're on, whether Mac or
PC, doesn't save their media objects, regardless of what they do. That
is, HC spins in infinity w/out ever giving a response like "Object
saved successfully."

While working here with my student, I have read and reread your
message below, and have to admit that I find it confusing, and
apologize that I cannot follow it. Can you perhaps put it a little
differently or more clearly so we can try it again?

All in all, I am wondering if the Baruch College computer network
inhibits the functionality of HC in some way -- could it be our
security settings, or some other features, that don't allow HC to work
properly? However, students' own personal computers are not working as
well, even ones outside the network, so I am unsure about this. But:
If you remember something as straightforward as the "Add Media" button
not having a pop-up on all our East Coast computers, whereas in L.A.
people say they do, that, too, points to some difference in
performance that I cannot explain.

I appreciate whatever light you can shed on these problems. I am still
unable to get a simple web link to function on HC, even after trying
different approaches...Thanks,

John Maciuika

Hi John,

I think I know what's causing the problems saving to collections. Are students trying to save to a collection you created? I mentioned when I was helping you with this at the beginning of the quarter that before they could save to a collection you'd created, you'd have to tell me the collection; I need to change permissions on the collection before others can save to it. Please let me know which it is, including the URL to it, and I can fix that quickly.

Thanks,
David
