Hi John,
Hi John,

Here's an example from the BAT club: http://www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com/detritus/moses/moses1.jpg.
The reason there's no <embed> here is that this is just an image, not
a video, and images use the <img> tag. It looks like they used a very
strange method of locating their images, which means that the absolute
URL isn't clear unless you know HTML, sorry. I know this requires a
lot of technical work--usually, people either upload images to HC or
to Flickr, and don't link to images on other sites, and they put
videos on Viddler/YouTube/the like and then get embed codes that way.
Both of those simplify the process a lot. You could also do it that
way if you wanted, too--but I'm not sure about the BAT club's policies
on that.

Thanks,
David

Yikes! I really wish I had taken a class on HTML at some point….I sort
of half get what you’re saying, but can I put you to the trouble of
actually doing this in one of the examples of one of the links I sent
to you, for example in the link below? That way I can actually see
your method and mimic doing that in other posts…I appreciate your help
– this is not easy! Also, I am discovering some of the old videos in
the “Archives” rail in hypercities.com, and am trying to watch those
to learn how to do some of these things. I don’t mean to be difficult,
but really: How can I ask students to be posting all this media to HC
if it is this complex, requiring knowledge of HTML and which segments
of code one has to clip to upload a website to HC? Or am I the only
one finding it so hard to make an external web page appear in HC?
Anyway, thanks very much and I’ll keep trying -- the example from
earlier was:
Hi John,

No, copying and pasting the source code of the whole article doesn't
work because a lot of that might be stripped out because tags get
removed by HyperCities for security and design reasons. The real
reason the images and videos don't show up is because I forgot to
mention another step: finding the absolute URL of the image. The
absolute URL includes the domain name where they're hosted, which you
can find by clipping off the part of the URL of the page they're
contained in after the last slash, and then putting whatever's in the
"src" element of the <image> tag. This is because the images are
stored on their servers, and when they put them on the pages, they
just point the URL to the image relative to where it's stored to the
document. The same is true for videos too--you need to add the URL to
the src attribute of that.

And yes, I think it would be good to post this to the discussion
forum--thanks!

David

Dear David,

I tried loading Page Source html code for the following NY Times
article, and no matter what I did, after saving it and checking to see
if the object loaded correctly, the html source code would not appear
in the media object HTML box, even though I had copied and saved it
there. And this is just me trying to load a newspaper article…am I
just doing it wrong? Should I just copy and paste the NY Times article
url into the media object box under HTML? When I try this I just get
the url when I open the object in the HC view; Should I load it as an
image where you “past url here”? This doesn’t appear to work either. I
am sorry but I am unable to figure this out….I played around with
“embeds” I found in the Page Source code, but as I mention above, the
code I’m copying and pasting isn’t being retained by the media object,
even after I click “SAVE.”

Thanks,
John
PS Would you prefer I post this message to HC Discussion Forum?

Hi John,

Hmmm ... maybe you can post the page here, and I can look and see if I
can find the embed code. Can you email it?

Thanks,
David

Hi David,
Thanks, and sure, I will write my questions to the Discussion group,
that makes sense.
I spent quite some time looking carefully through the Page Source html
code for both the examples I sent you, but in both instances the
rather elaborate pages were coded without any mention or use of the
word "embed." I even tried conducting a search using the Find command
inside the source page, and confirmed there was none. However, with of
the websites in question seem like they should somehow be "loadable"
as media objects; I am just at a loss as ti how to do that when there
is no "embed" material in the page source thatch could cut and paste.
Thanks again David - best,
John

Hi John,

Unfortunately, you need to get into the HTML of the webpage to find
this. To do this, view the page source in your browser, and search for
an <embed> tag. Then copy and paste the entire tag into the HTML
window in HyperCities. That should work. If any of your students are
HTML-savvy, they might be able to help.

By the way, we have a help forum on Google Groups, and some of your
answers might be interesting to more people. Would you mind posting
tech support questions there from now on? You can access the forum by
clicking on the Help button on the upper-right hand corner of
Hypercities. I get emails when people post there, so it shouldn't be
any slower than emailing me directly. And you can always email me if
you don't get an answer.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

Here’s a NY Times video I would love to embed, but I hunt in vain for
the source code for embedding – any thoughts, or do I just have to
list the url and ask students to visit the NY Times video site for
viewing?

Thanks! And sorry to be bothering you with all these questions, but I
am trying to overcome whatever obstacles I can on my own!
Best,
John
