Finding it very interesting that companies like 3PlayMedia.com (and soon I believe) Koemei.com are offering Transcript Alignment services : http://www.3playmedia.com/services-features/services/transcript-alignment/

This is useful because this can be achieved entirely automatically as long as you have both the media and the transcript. Turn around times are then usually hours as opposed to days for transcription requirements where only the media is supplied.

Of course this turnaround will only get better as technology improves. Definitely worth keeping an eye on, in fact we used Koemei in a recent interactive we created for AlJazeera.com http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/interactive/2013/02/201321213243145814.html

Incidentally any feedback on how we could improve the above interactive is very welcome. You can be frank :)

Mark, any particular reason you used Koemei rather than 3play? I noticed you used 3P for the debate transcripts.

Hi Zev,

At the time they were the only people I knew of that provided a completely automated word-level time alignment from transcript and video, which meant we could achieve a faster turnaround. Since then 3PlayMedia have come out with a similar service.

We've had exceptional service from both 3PlayMedia and Koemei.

This AlJazeera / State of Union piece is real something. I've been trying to think why it takes a bit of time when looking at it - even knowing it's a hyperaudio project - to realise just how much is possible. A few little thoughts:

 - there's lots of incredible use cases of Hyperaudio here, but as this will be the first time people have experienced anything like it the one thing it could perhaps go further on is to encourage me to play.. (eg.. this might be controversial with the AJ editors or at least server admins, but it would be amazing if you could have a cut and paste your own version of the Union address and share with your friends, a la Daily Show / Chris Morris / etc)

 - could you put the search higher up, above the tag clouds? so you can jump in and play with this before having to read much?

 - did you try any designs where the transcript is to the left of the video (and the tag clouds underneath), so it is the first big item in the line of sight? I realise there's a loading delay, but this idea of clicking on a word and getting the video to jump to it is so new to people perhaps the viewer should see this before the video to emphasise the importance (at least in LTR cultures). And maybe the font size and text area of this could be bigger with a slightly more obvious 'bouncing ball' effect as the transcript continues.

 - having two versions of the transcript - a clickable one and a normal one - meant I tried to click on the second transcript while the interactive one was loading.. could the interactive one instead be styled to look like the normal one or is there another reason for having two?

best

Overwhelming props for the Chris Morris reference.

Hi Nic, thanks for the great feedback. I'll pass it on to the folk at AJ - I'm sure they'll be interested too.

The cut and paste functionality you mention is an integral part of the Hyperaudio Pad so it's exciting to hear that you think that would be something worth doing. I think the Popcorn team are also looking at sequencing with Popcorn Maker albeit from another angle.

Regarding the search, yes I think it needs to be prominent, we're limited by space that the interactive can take up, (maybe it's time to break out of iFrames and the CMS </dreams>). Having said that making the search more prominent is certainly something we'll be looking at for next time. Re Chris Morris (agreed Ben - a legend) I guess it depends if we are using the material for satire or just creating a 'more serious' summary. But yes I think a way to go is lead by example.

Although there are two bodies of text only one part is the transcript, the other is a journalist's summary, although time permitting we'd probably seek to link the summary to the video as well. Especially the quotes. Although one of the applications of Hyperaudio is word accurate time-aligned content that allow people to share, search and assemble content, I see that as just one way of breaking audio out of its silo. I really liked what the NYT did with Snow Fall - I think it really showed what we can do when we break media out of its black box and importantly makes an emotional connection with the reader/(viewer?) http://www.nytimes.com/projects/2012/snow-fall/ I think we can learn from this type of interactive. It would be interesting to scroll through say the SOTU summaries and fade in relevant parts of the speech in the background and even insert parts of the video and photos into the summary as it scrolled.

Thanks again for the feedback, it really is very useful!

Cheers

Mark
