Mirielle Bell explained "Mirror" by Sylvia Plath beautifully . It was
explained in detail to the point where I could just read her comments
and annotations alone , and fully understand as well as grasp the
total general concept of Plath's ideology in the poem Mirror - as it
reads. I have learned in Plath's poems she uses tons of descriptions
and imagery . Her poems are not necessarilly difficult , but they
contain words and descriptors maybe unheard of - to the basic ear of
a person who is not really a literature hub or book reading
connoisseur , or someone of that stature .I understand the poem Mirror
to be about a woman looking at her self image through her reflection
in the mirror.'The candles of the moon that lie', represent the lies
men whom fell in love with her have told her . She does not believe
because her dad was an abusive parent , men including him have
probably told her things she didn't believe.Yet , she is afraid of
losing this 'beauty' that she does not believe she has-as old age
beckons ..."Old women coming out of a mirrored lake like a terrible
fish."She does not feel any inward beauty. Its is safe to say, based
upon my understanding , the woman discussed is having some internal
conflict -she is somewhat confused as to her external and internal
beauty . As a result of her early abuse , this is probably linking to
her misguided thinking of whom she really is .
