The Correa River Ecology Laboratory at the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mississippi State University (MSU) invites applications for a Ph.D. graduate student research assistant to Assess floodplain habitats and use by people and fishes in the Sre Ambel River, Cambodia. The selected graduate student will work closely with MSU faculty Drs. Sandra B. Correa (www.riverecologylab.org), Wes Neal, Peter Allen, Joshua Granger (https://www.cfr.msstate.edu/people/index.asp), and Vitor S. Martins https://www.abe.msstate.edu/people/faculty/vitor-martins/), and with scientists at the Wildlife Conservation Society-Cambodia (WCS).
Location: This position is primarily based on the MSU campus, located in Starkville, Mississippi. Annual trips to Cambodia are expected in Years 1-2.
Duties: The successful applicant will be primarily involved in research and is expected to lead an independent research project. The first phase (years 1-2) will focus on collecting and analyzing remote sensing and on-the-ground data to characterize floodplain habitat and human use in the Sre Ambel River. The second phase (year 3 and half of year 4) will focus on linking artisanal fisheries to floodplain habitat by analyzing an existing dataset for the Sre Ambel River. In addition, the student will prepare manuscripts for publication, present results at professional conferences, provide teaching assistantship support, and complete the requirements for a Ph.D. degree in 3.5 years.
Qualifications: M.S. degree in ecology, natural resources, geography, or a related field is required. Knowledge of wetlands, forests, and fish sampling methods, ecological theory, and solid quantitative, GIS, and R programming skills are highly desirable. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required. The ability to communicate in Khmer is a plus. For non-native English speakers, a TOEFL score of 550 PBT or 79 iBT (Internet-Based Test) or an IELTS score of 6.5 (International English Language Testing System) is required. GRE scores are required.
Funding: Limited to 3.5 years. Annual funding includes a US$23,500 stipend, $13,000 tuition remission, and $1,700 health insurance. WCS will provide additional funding and support to complete fieldwork in Cambodia in years 1-2.
